MATRICARIA Feverfew

0114 matricaria

Feverfew may be listed as Matricaria eximia or Chrysan-themum parthenium in the seed catalogues. The compact plant, barely 1ft high, with its mass of small, cushion-like flowers looks like a miniature Chrysanthemum. The foliage is pungent and the ¾ in. flowers are intensely double. They may be ball-like or there may be an outer ring of short petals. Try it as an unusal summer bedding plant..

VARIETIES : The colour range of Matricaria is distinctly limited – there is just yellow and white. For button-like flowers without an outer ring of guard petals, choose ‘Golden Ball’ (yellow) or ‘Ball’s Double White’ ( white ). A variation is a cushion-like flower with a frill of short, broad petals – look for ‘Snow Puffs’ , ‘White Stare’ and ‘Snow Ball’.

SITE & SOIL : Any well-drained garden soil will do – thrives best in full sun.

PLANT DETAILS : Height 8 in. – 1 ft. Spacing 1 ft. Flowering period June – August.
