Bred on the inner Hebridean Isle of Skye in the 17th century to hunt otters , weasels , and bangers, these terriers were a favoured companion of Scottish and English royalty . Their popularity , however , declined in the 20th century , graceful in appearance , with a relatively light build and long , silky coat , the Skye terrier can be intensely loyal , however they are not ideal for children , and can be short on patience and liable to snap if provoked
