The Japanese terrier is a streamlined , elegant dog with distinctive colour scheme . it is probably descended from smooth fox terriers taken to japan by the dutch in the early 18th century . the body is white and flecked with black , while the head is solid back

Although they make very competent retrievers on land and in water , historically these dogs have been most popular as companions . also called the Nippon or nihon terrier , the breed is virtually unknown outside its native land , and rare even there . inbreeding is an everpresent problem , and is not helped by tendency to breed for miniaturization .
