FINISHED MEASUREMENT Each 3 ½ inches tall
MATERIALS
- Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet size 10 crochet cotton (white: 400 yds per ball; solids: 350 yds per ball): 200 yds each #435 silver, #12 black and #1 white 20 yds #401 orchid pink 1 yd #310 copper mist
- Size 7 /1.65mm steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
- Tapestry needle
- Sewing needle
- ½ -inch copper cowbell
- Fiberfill
- Stitch marker
GAUGE
9 sc = 1 inch; 9 sc rnds = 1 inch
PATTERN NOTES
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Work in continuous rounds, do not turn or join unless otherwise stated.
Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.
Mark first stitch of round, move marker as work progresses.
SPECIAL STITCH
Loop stitch (lp st): Insert hook in st, wrap yarn once around index finger, insert hook from left to right under lps, draw through, removing finger, draw thread coming from ball to make 1/4-3/s-inch lp, yo and draw through all lps on hook.
HIPPO
HEAD
Rnd 1: With silver, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place marker (see Pattern Notes). (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: [Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: [Sc in each of next 14 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (32 sc)
Rnd 7: [Sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (36 sc)
Rnd 8: Sc in each sc around. Rnds 9-15: Rep rnd 8. Stuff Head with fiberfill, continue stuffing as work progresses.
Rnd 16: [Sc in each of next 4 sc, sc dee (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sc] around. (30 sc)
Rnds 17 & 18: Rep rnd 8.
Rnd 19: [Sc in each of next 3 sc, sc dee in next 2 sc] around, join (see Pattern Notes) in first sc, leaving a 12-inch length, fasten off. (24 sc)
SNOUT
Rnds 1-9: Rep rnds 1-9 of Head. At the end of rnd 9,join in next sc, leaving 10-inch length, fasten off. (36 sc) Stuff Snout with fiberfill and sew to lower portion of Head between rnds 8-19.
NOSTRILS
Make2.
Rnd 1: With silver, ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place marker. (5 sc)
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around, join in first sc, leaving 8-inch length, fasten off.
Sew Nostrils to rnds 6 and 7 of Snout 5 sts apart.
facial features
Eyes
With black, embroider satin stitch (see illustration) eyes over rnds 6-8 of Head above Snout.
Mouth
With black, embroider smiling Mouth with straight stitches (see illustration) on rnds 1-5 of Snout upper half.
Teeth
With white, embroider 3 small straight stitches for each Tooth at each corner below Mouth, leaving 4 sts between Teeth.
Eyelid
Make2.
Row 1 (RS): With silver, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 hdc in each of next 2 chs, sc in last ch, leaving an 8-inch length, fasten off. (6 sts)
With WS facing, sew Eyelid above each Eye.
EAR
Make2.
Row 1: With silver, ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (5 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, (sc, hdc) in next sc, 2 hdc in next sc, (hdc, sc) in next sc, sc in last sc, leaving 8-inch length, fasten off. (8 sts)
Sew Ears to Head above Eyelids 3.4 inch apart.
BODY
Rnd 1: With silver, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place marker. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: Rep rnd 4. (32 sc) Rnds 6-20: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 21: [Sc in each of next
2 sc, sc dee in next 2 sc] around. (24 sc)
Rnd 22: Rep rnd 21. Stuff Body with fiberfill. (18 sc)
Rnd 23: [Sc in next sc, sc dee in next 2 sc] around, finish stuffing with fiberfill. (12 sc)
Rnd 24: [Sc dee in next 2 sc]
6 times, leaving 6-inch length, join in first SC. Fasten off (6 sc)
LEG Make4.
Rnd 1: With silver, ch 2, 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place marker. (7 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (14 sc)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (21 sc)
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 5: Sc in each of next 7 sc, [sc dee in next 2 sc] 3 times, sc in each of next 8 sc. (18 sc)
Rnds 6-12: Rep rnd 4. At the end of rnd 12, leaving 12-inch length, fasten off.
Stuff Legs and sew to underside of Body. Sew Head to front of Body.
TAIL
With silver, ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each rem ch across, fasten off
Cut 2 strands of silver each 5 inches long. Holding both strands tog, fold in half, insert hook in last st of Tail, draw strands through at fold to form lp on hook, draw cut ends through lp on hook, pull tightly to secure. Trim ends. Sew opposite end of Tail to back of Body.
COW
HEAD
Rnd 1 (RS): With white, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join (see Pattern Notes) in first sc, turn. (6 sc)
Rnd 2 (WS): Work 2 Ip sts
(see Special Stitch) in each st around, join in first lp st, do not turn. (12 lp sts)
Rnd 3 (WS): Ch 1, [Ip st in next st, 2 lp sts in next st] around, join in beg lp st, turn. (18 lp sts)
Rnd 4 (RS): [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around, place marker (see Pattern Notes). (24 sc)
Rnd 5: [Sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (27 sc)
Rnds 6-11: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 12: [Sc in each of next 7 sc, sc dee (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sc] around. (24 sc)
Stuff Head with fiberfill.
Rnd 13: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, sc dee in next 2 sc] around. (18 sc)

Finish stuffing Head.
BODY
Rnd 1: Starting at front of Body, with white, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place marker. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: [Sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] around. (28 sc)
Rnds 6-17: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 18: [Sc in each of next 5 sc, sc dee in next 2 sc] around, stuff Body with fiberfill .. (24 sc)
Rnd 19: [Sc in each of next 2 sc, sc dee in next 2 sc] around. (18 sc)
Rnd 20: [Sc in next sc, sc dee in next 2 sc] around, finish stuffing with fiberfill. (12 sc)
Rnd 21: [Sc dee in next 2 sc] 6 times, leaving 6-inch length, join in first sc. Fasten off (6 sc)
Sew Head to Body.
SNOUT
Rnd 1: With orchid pink, ch 6,
3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 chs, 3 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, SC in each of next 3 chs. (12 sc)
Rnd 2: [2 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc in each of next 3 sc] twice. (18 sc)
Rnds 3 & 4: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 4, sl st in next sc, leaving 10-inch length, fasten off.
Stuff Snout with fiberfill and sew to front of Head.
EAR
Make2.
With black, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 5 hdc in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, hdc in next ch, sc in each of next 2 chs, leaving 10-inch length, fasten off.
Sew sc end of Ear to Head slightly below lp st rnds.
FACIAL FEATURES
Eyes
With black, embroider satin stitch (see illustration) Eyes on Head above Snout.
Mouth & Nostrils
With black, embroider smiling Mouth with straight stitches (see illustration) centered on Snout, with small straight stitches for Nostrils.
PATCHES
With black, embroider satin stitch Patches randomly on Head and Body.
LEG
Make4.
Rnd 1: Starting at hoof with black, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (8 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (16 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in each sc around. Rnd 4: Sc in each of next 6 sc, [sc dee in next 2 sc] twice, sc in each of next 6 sc, join in first sc. Fasten off. (14 sc)
Rnd 5: Join white in any sc, sc in each sc around. (14 sc)
Rnds 6-13: Sc in each sc around. At the end of rnd 13, join in first sc, leaving 10-inch length, fasten off.
Stuff Legs with fiberfill and sew to underside of Body.
UDDER
Rnd 1: With orchid pink, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in next sc, [ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook for Udder, sc in each of next 2 sc] 5 times, sc in next sc. (12 sc, 5 udders)
Rnd 4: Holding ch-3 udders forward and working behind
chs, sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
Rnd 5: Sc in each sc around, leaving 10-inch length, fasten off.
Stuff Udder with fiberfill and sew to underside of Body.
TAIL
With white, ch 5, fasten off.
Cut 2 strands of white each
4 inches long. Holding both strands tog, fold in half, insert hook in last st of Tail, draw strands through at fold to
form lp on hook, draw cut ends through lp on hook, pull tightly to secure. Trim ends. Sew opposite end of Tail to back of Body.
COWBELL
With copper mist, ch 25 or desired length to fit around neckline of Cow, fasten off. Thread ch through Cowbell and sew ends tog at back neckline. Weave ends in Body.
